Leeds are gearing up for a difficult summer when it comes to retaining Raphinha, as Barcelona’s interest in the Brazilian international intensifies.

A move away from Leeds feels like a real possibility between now and the start of 2022/23, but reports suggest it won’t be the first time the Whites have fielded an offer for the 25-year-old’s service.

As per a report from Mundo Deportivo, Leeds knocked back a £40m bid from Chelsea for Raphinha in the January transfer window.

That would have been a club-record sale for Leeds, whose current highest fee received stands at £30m for Rio Ferdinand back in 2002.

Raphinha, 25, has scored nine goals and registered three assists for Leeds this season, proving to be a bright spark in a tough campaign in 2021/22.

His current deal at Elland Road runs until the summer of 2024.

Given Leeds’ precarious position in the Premier League and the fact they are fighting relegation, they were never going to sell Raphinha in January, particularly not for £40m.

If Raphinha is to move domestically, Leeds are likely to demand a fee that smashes the record paid for Ferdinand 20 years ago.

That being said, if he moves abroad, it might be a touch cheaper, particularly given the noises coming out of the reports linking Barcelona with a move.

As for Chelsea, unless something drastic changes and their takeover goes through, it might be too late to swoop for Raphinha again.

Barcelona appear to be putting in a lot of groundwork now and will be favourites to eventually get a deal done.
