Leeds have full focus on the Premier League run-in and building their way away from the relegation zone.
The same can be said of Leeds’ divisional rivals, Newcastle, who are only two points better off than Jesse Marsch’s side.
Whilst tentative talk at Leeds has been on the summer, it appears that Newcastle’s near full focus has switched to recruitment.
As per a report from The Daily Mail, Newcastle have held in-depth discussion on transfer targets, scanning over a number of positions, including central midfield.
In that report, it claims that Leeds’ Phillips was on the agenda, with a move for the England international under consideration.
How much is Kalvin Phillips worth?
Less than £60m
More than £60m
The 26-year-old has played only 12 times in the Premier League this season, missing four months of the campaign due to a hamstring injury.
Phillips will have two years to run on his Leeds contract by the time the summer comes, with reports yesterday suggesting that he’s willing to commit beyond that.
If Leeds can stay up and agree a new contract with Phillips, it’s going to take an enormous bid from Newcastle to get their hands on the England international.
We know that Newcastle’s newfound wealth means money isn’t really a hurdle for them, but if Phillips shows commitment to Leeds by signing on again, it’s going to be hard for the Magpies to convince the 26-year-old to make what is – for now – a sideways move.
A lot, though, is going to depend on how the run-in plays out.
Leeds and Newcastle are in strong positions to kick on in the coming weeks and secure safety. However, there’s also the possibility that they might be pulled back into trouble if they don’t hit the ground running in April.
This story’s picture might change as the fixtures and results roll in.
