Manchester United has now lost four home games across all competitions on their turf without scoring a single goal which is typical of a mediocre team. Their shambolic performances at home started in the Carabao Cup third-round match against West Ham United which they fell 1-0, courtesy of Lanzini’s brilliant finish. Three days later, they were stunned by Dean Smith’s Aston Villa 1-0 with Hause scoring the only goal of the match.
Liverpool then condemned them to an embarrassing 5-0 defeat with four goals coming in the first half. Mohamed Salah was the difference in the game as he scored a hat-trick against the dismantled Old Trafford side. Manchester City further exposed their weaknesses by dominating the game from start to finish with Man United having just one shot on target through Cristiano Ronaldo.
These poor results are unsatisfactory from one of the best clubs in Europe and the 13 times Premier League Champions. Before now, Manchester United was known for its scintillating achievements domestically and in Europe. As such, playing against them on their home soil was very intimidating and not to mention winning against them which was almost an impossible task. But today, Old Trafford has become a ground where any team can stroll in and out with convincing victories due to the mediocrity of the team. The glory of the club has indeed departed the Manchester side with the team often seen struggling to keep possessions, let alone create chances.
For the past weeks, the club has come under serious scrutiny and criticism starting from the hierarchy down to the players except for a few of them like Cristiano Ronaldo, De Gea, Varane, and Bruno Fernandes. This inconsistent renditions by the Red Devils could end them in another season without silverware. At the moment, it is almost looking impossible for them to win games irrespective of the venue or competition which is so belittling for a high-status club like Manchester United. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a huge task of restoring Old Trafford to its Glory days and also exploring ways to improve the team.
