It was not the expected result, but FC Barcelona took a golden point from the RCD Stadium to stay in the Champions League places and close the gap on Real Madrid in the table.

The twenty-fourth LaLiga Santander matchday has been red-hot. FC Barcelona played a crazy game at Cornellà and managed to salvage a draw in extremis. The Culés remain in fourth place in the championship, but with no margin for error. However, they are now 15 points behind the leaders, but with the same points as Atlético de Madrid. Mistakes are not allowed for the Culés.

Real Madrid have a good cushion in the standings and their draw at La Cerámica has not worried them, as far as the standings are concerned. La Casa Blanca were held to a draw by Villarreal at La Cerámica.

After a sluggish start, Carlo Ancelotti’s men stepped up in the second half and had a number of clear chances to kill off the game against a ‘groguet’ side that went from strength to strength and lost gas when the visitors reacted. The scoreboard did not move, however, and both clubs lost important points.

Madrid remain at the top of the table with 54 points, four more than Sevilla (50), who finally got back to winning ways against Elche with a convincing 2-0 win on Friday. In third place are Real Betis, who thrashed Levante at the Ciutat de Valencia. A comfortable 2-4 win keeps Betis firmly in LaLiga and their 43 points are proof of that. It only remains to be seen if they can ‘keep up’ the pace with the return of the Europa League.

In fourth place is FC Barcelona again with 39 points, after the victory at the RCDE Stadium. Xavi’s side played a very negative game, but the point they got allows them to stay in the top 4, something that was not long ago considered impossible because they were a team in doubt and out of the European places.

In fifth place is Atlético de Madrid, with 39 points after the crazy game they played at the Wanda Metropolitano against Getafe. Cholo Simeone’s side started brightly and with the feeling that they had turned the page after the drubbing at the Camp Nou, but the opposite was the case. They managed to take a 2-0 lead, but in less than ten minutes the visitors turned the scoreline on its head. 2-3 and a nightmare for the ‘colchoneros’. Correa levelled the score before the break. Late on, Mario Hermoso made it 4-3 and saved his side.

Here’s the rest of the LaLiga standings

In sixth place is Real Sociedad (38) after their 2-0 win over Granada. They are followed by Villarreal after their goalless draw against Real Madrid. Unai Emery’s side have 36 points in LaLiga and are also dreaming of closing the gap. Athletic Bilbao (34), Osasuna (32) after their win over Rayo Vallecano and Celta Vigo (31) close out the top 10.

In the middle of the table are Rayo (31), Valencia (30), Espanyol (28), Elche (26), Getafe (25), Granada (24) and Mallorca, with 23 points. Meanwhile, in the relegation zone are Deportivo Alavés, with 20 points after their 2-1 win over Valencia, Cádiz with 19 points and Levante, who have yet to get off the mark in the championship, with 11 points.
