Chelsea could still lose captain Cesar Azpilicueta for nothing this summer despite the club triggering his 12-month contract extension.
Azpilicueta’s contract with Chelsea was set to expire at the end of the current season but the club decided to extend his stay for another campaign. The Spaniard reached the minimum number of games needed to trigger an automatic one-year extension earlier this month.
However, according to the latest reports, the Blues might allow Azpi to leave on a free transfer despite the recent contract extension.
Tuchel on Azpilicueta’s future
“It could be that it feels for him like the end of the story here, it could be but does not have to be like this,” the German said.
“Even if it is like this we have the contract now, we can rely on him and make him stay.”
The 32-year-old signed for the Blues from Marseille in 2013 and has made 464 appearances – the seventh-most for the club since his arrival.
