Arteta could finally be about to give ‘terrific’ Arsenal player a chance with Tierney out injured

by Vibecity

With left-back Kieran Tierney ruled out for the rest of the season, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta may have to shuffle his pack in the quest to finish fourth. The Athletic report that the former Celtic man will have surgery later this week on his knee injury, and he is facing several months out.Prior to missing last night’s 3-0 loss against Crystal Palace, the Scotland international, who could miss his nation’s World Cup play-off scheduled for June, had started Arsenal’s previous 14 top-flight games, playing 90 minutes in all but one.Nuno Tavares deputised in the 24-year-old’s absence at Selhurst Park, but Arteta brought off the Portuguese Under-21 international at half-time in what the Spaniard described as a “tactical” change. Granit Xhaka was then moved to left-back.Photo by David Price/Arsenal FC via Getty Images7 Greatest Premier League Left Wingers of All TimeIt was a difficult evening for Tavares who looked off the pace and it’s the second time in as many starts that the former Benfica man has been hauled off, following his nightmare afternoon against Nottingham Forest in January which lasted 35 minutes. With the margin for error so slender in the pursuit for Champions League qualification, Arteta can ill-afford to risk Tavares producing further error strewn performances.Teams will expose his vulnerabilities and Arsenal cannot afford to be carrying any passengers as the team enters the crucial run in phase.Arteta could well decide to drop Bukayo Saka, a player he can trust, into left-back for the remainder of the season.Photo by Stuart MacFarlane/Arsenal FC via Getty ImagesThe Gunners will be losing his attacking threat from the right-hand side, but he could still contribute to the side’s attacking threat with overlapping runs from deep.Dropping Saka to left-back could allow Nicolas Pepe, who Arteta labelled “terrific” in 2021, to come back into the side and prove his worth from the right.Arsenal’s number 19 hasn’t started a Premier League game since October, but he could have a fresh chance to impress if Arteta decides to drop Saka into the backline.Beyond playing Saka at left-back, the Spaniard’s other options apart from Tavares are Xhaka or putting Cedric Soares there when Takehiro Tomiyasu is ready to return at right-back.Photo by Stuart MacFarlane/Arsenal FC via Getty ImagesTierney’s injury is a hammer blow and it gives Arteta a real selection quandary which could mean that Saka’s attacking influence is sacrificed for the good of the Gunners being a more robust unit.
